Synopsis

Candy Montgomery (Elizabeth Olsen) is the model wife, mother and choir volunteer everyone trusts. Her friend Betty Gore (Lily Rabe) lives a near-identical life: same congregation, daughters who are best friends, husbands working in tech. When Candy starts an affair with Betty's husband Allan, it plays out like a quiet, almost bored arrangement. Then a June morning in 1980 ends in forty-one blows. Jesse Plemons, Patrick Fugit and Krysten Ritter round out the cast.
The series rebuilds an actual Collin County case — the trial, the testimony, the self-defense argument that split the jury. Creator David E. Kelley and director Lesley Linka Glatter keep the camera on the slow drift toward violence rather than the gore itself. Olsen plays the horror of the ordinary: her Candy keeps smiling at the neighbors right up to the moment she reaches for the handle. Seven episodes carry it from first meeting to verdict.
