Synopsis
Lust for Life (1956) is Vincente Minnelli's biographical drama about Vincent van Gogh — watch it online on iFILM. Kirk Douglas plays the Dutch painter as a man permanently on the edge: brilliant, driven, and utterly incapable of making the world understand what he was doing.
After failures as a preacher and a would-be lover, Van Gogh ends up in France. There he shares a studio with Paul Gauguin, played by Anthony Quinn — two painters with clashing ideas about what art should be. The collaboration was never going to hold.
Minnelli filmed on location in the actual fields and villages Van Gogh painted, which gives the whole picture an uncanny texture: you recognize the canvases in the landscapes. Quinn took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor despite being on screen for less than fifteen minutes, one of the sharpest performances in the film's history.
