Synopsis
The Promised Land (1975) is a Polish historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Andrzej Wajda and adapted from the Nobel Prize-winning novel by Władysław Reymont, it captures the bruising energy of Łódź at the height of the Industrial Revolution.
Three friends stake everything on building the biggest textile factory in the city: Polish nobleman Karol Borowiecki (Daniel Olbrychski), Jewish stockbroker Moryc Welt (Wojciech Pszoniak), and German businessman Max Baum (Andrzej Seweryn). What starts as a partnership turns into a slow reckoning with what each man will give up — and for how little. Wajda doesn't frame capitalism as progress; he frames it as a machine people feed themselves into voluntarily.
At 169 minutes, the film earned Poland an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film and remains a landmark of European cinema. Hard to shake. Stream The Promised Land online on iFILM.
