Synopsis
Ashes and Diamonds (Popiół i diament, 1958) is Andrzej Wajda's war drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The whole story unfolds across a single day — 8 May 1945, with Germany about to surrender — yet in one small Polish town, the killing hasn't stopped. Former resistance comrades and the incoming Communist authorities are already carving up the country, and the dividing line runs straight between Poles.
Maciek, a young Home Army fighter, is handed orders to gun down a local Party secretary. The ambush goes wrong: two ordinary workers die instead, and the hit has to be done over. While he waits for his real target at the Monopol hotel, a barmaid named Krystyna pulls him sideways — one night with her makes him ask, for the first time, why anyone should keep killing once the war is finished. Zbigniew Cybulski plays him in dark glasses and a leather jacket, a look that earned him the tag "the Polish James Dean."
Wajda closed his wartime trilogy here, adapting Jerzy Andrzejewski's novel into a requiem for a generation that survived the occupation only to fall to its own countrymen. The rubbish-dump finale, the shot glasses set alight, the body laid out on white sheets — images later borrowed across European art cinema. This is heavy, beautiful filmmaking, not light entertainment, made for anyone who loves the classics. Stream Ashes and Diamonds (1958) online on iFILM.
