Synopsis
In the Company of Men (1997) is Neil LaBute's debut feature, and you can watch it online on iFILM. A pitch-black comedy about two corporate men and a cruel bet with a real person's heart as the stake.
Chad and Howard are sent to a satellite office for six weeks. Bored and bitter, they cook up a plan: pick a lonely, vulnerable woman, both court her at once, then dump her cold to prove women can be controlled. Their target is Christine, a deaf typist from their own company. Aaron Eckhart makes Chad terrifying precisely because he is charming, easy, funny — and utterly without conscience underneath.
LaBute shoots in long, near-static takes, trapping his characters in glass conference rooms where the silence stings harder than any outburst. The film took a prize at Sundance and won an Independent Spirit Award for best debut, while launching Eckhart's career. It is a hard, deeply uncomfortable watch for people who want cinema to ask ugly questions rather than soothe. Stream In the Company of Men (1997) online on iFILM.
