Synopsis
The Shape of Things (2003) is a sharp drama edged with comedy that you can watch online on iFILM. Neil LaBute adapts his own stage play, and the whole film rests on four young performers: Paul Rudd, Rachel Weisz, Gretchen Mol and Fred Weller. Shy student Adam works part-time guarding a university art gallery.
There he meets Evelyn, an art student who treats freedom and provocation as higher values than any social rule. Under her influence Adam transforms — new diet, new clothes, old insecurities shed one by one. His friends Jenny and Philip find the makeover unsettling, and the viewer keeps wondering where this romance ends and an experiment begins.
LaBute stays true to form: few locations, talky scenes, and a closing turn that makes you reread everything that came before. It's built for people who enjoy cruel dialogue and uncomfortable questions about love, manipulation and how far someone will go for another person.
