Synopsis

Episode six, "The Murder and the Prince", unfolds in the middle of the Düsseldorf carnival — costumed crowds, noise, and the ideal cover for a killing. The case also introduces Chief Inspector Max Ballauf, a character who would become one of the show's most durable faces. Episode eleven pivots on a kidnapping: a businessman is seized right after meeting his lover, his driver killed in the grab; the abductor then withholds his demands and focuses on psychological pressure instead, which makes the investigation considerably harder. Episode thirteen is built around a corruption scheme — an insider lets two men into the Düsseldorf building authority, a night guard stumbles onto them photographing plans, and what follows is a staged cover-up with more people involved than the first sweep suggests. The season closes with Lena Odenthal: a mother and daughter spot a young man's body in the Rhine fog near Ludwigshafen, and when the police arrive, the bank is empty.
