Synopsis
The Defiant Ones (1958) is Stanley Kramer's landmark crime drama you can watch online on iFILM. Two prisoners break free after a transport crash — one white, one Black — shackled together at the wrist and running through the Southern night with a posse closing in from every direction.
Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier start as men who despise each other on sight. Every step through swamp and forest forces a renegotiation. Kramer keeps the moralizing off the script and lets the chain do the talking: survival demands something that looks uncomfortably like trust, and the film watches both men resist that conclusion for as long as they physically can.
The picture landed two Oscars — for cinematography and original screenplay — and hit American screens right in the middle of the civil rights era, when the image of those two men chained together meant something specific and charged. It holds up not as a message film but as a lean, unsentimental thriller with two performances that carry real weight. Stream The Defiant Ones (1958) on iFILM.
