Synopsis
Brute Force (1947) is a prison noir directed by Jules Dassin, available to watch online on iFILM. Westgate Prison was already brutal before Captain Munsey arrived. Under his watch, it becomes something closer to a private fiefdom — and Munsey, played with glacial menace by Hume Cronyn, is the kind of authority figure who mistakes cruelty for strength.
Burt Lancaster stars as Joe Collins, a convict with more reason than most to get out: the woman he loves is dying outside, unaware he is even in prison. The film weaves in his fellow inmates through a series of flashbacks — each man's backstory a small, bleak story of how ordinary life tips into catastrophe. Together they plot a breakout with no illusions about the odds.
Dassin loaded the film with a social anger unusual for studio-era Hollywood, and Universal let him do it — perhaps because the allegory about fascism dressed in a warden's uniform was readable enough to pass. Among late-1940s crime pictures, this one hits hardest. Stream Brute Force (1947) online on iFILM.
