The Avengers (1961) is the cult British spy series you can watch online on iFILM. Forget the Marvel superheroes — this is the wry one, about unflappable secret agent John Steed, bowler hat and umbrella in hand, saving England from gloriously absurd plots.

Steed (Patrick Macnee) never works alone. Across its run he was paired with a string of partners who each became icons: Cathy Gale (Honor Blackman), the inimitable Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) in her leather catsuit, and Tara King (Linda Thorson). The villains match them — killer robots, mad scientists, man-eating plants and other oddities, all played with that signature British calm.

Running from 1961 to 1969, the show set the template for style, flirtation and the surreal in spy fiction long before its many imitators.
