After his wife dies, pilot Jake Barnes uproots the family from Chicago to Alaska, trading airline cockpits for a small bush plane that hauls supplies to far-off settlements. Then a storm run goes wrong and Jake's plane goes down somewhere in the peaks.

With the search dragging, the kids strike out to find him themselves — on foot over glaciers and rivers, joined by an orphaned polar bear cub they pry loose from a poacher. Shot on location in British Columbia, where the mountains pull as much weight as the actors.
