Synopsis
Margot at the Wedding (2007) — watch online on iFILM. Noah Baumbach's follow-up to The Squid and the Whale stars Nicole Kidman as Margot, a sharp-tongued short story writer who shows up uninvited to her estranged sister Pauline's (Jennifer Jason Leigh) seaside wedding with her teenage son in tow.
The groom is Malcolm, played by Jack Black — unemployed, affable, and thoroughly unprepared for Margot. She starts deconstructing the engagement before she's unpacked. What follows is less a wedding comedy than an excavation of two sisters who share a difficult childhood and have spent years shaping competing versions of it. John Turturro and Ciarán Hinds appear as the men orbiting the sisters — and getting the worst of their orbit.
Baumbach shoots in grainy 16mm, keeping the whole film a little airless and exposed. It's a deliberately uncomfortable watch: nobody behaves well, nobody gets redeemed on schedule. Those who found The Squid and the Whale too soft will find this one considerably sharper. Stream Margot at the Wedding (2007) in full on iFILM.
