Synopsis
Kicking and Screaming (1995) is Noah Baumbach's debut feature — watch online on iFILM. Josh Hamilton plays Grover, whose girlfriend Jane takes off to Prague while he stays behind with a loose circle of post-grads who can't quite bring themselves to leave campus. Parker Posey and Chris Eigeman fill out the ensemble.
No one in this film has a plan and no one particularly wants one. They hang around the university bar, argue about books they half-read, miss each other's signals and quietly envy Chet — the ten-year student who tends bar and may be the most honest person in the building. Baumbach shot the whole thing as a dialogue-driven portrait of a specific kind of paralysis: the gap between finishing school and starting anything else.
It came out in a good year for this kind of indie, but Kicking and Screaming stands up because it doesn't condescend to its characters or pretend their stasis is charming. Baumbach is clearly writing from inside the experience. Tagline on the poster: Anxiety loves company. That's accurate. Stream Kicking and Screaming (1995) online on iFILM.
