Synopsis
Simply Black (Tout simplement noir, 2020) is a French comedy you can watch online on iFILM, co-directed by Jean-Pascal Zadi and John Wax. Zadi also stars as a 40-year-old failed stand-up comic with an idea: organize the first Black protest march in French history. His plan falls apart the moment he starts talking to people.
The film follows his attempts to build a coalition among prominent Black figures in French entertainment. Omar Sy, Matthieu Kassovitz, Éric Judor, Ramzy Bedia, and Fabrice Eboué all appear as themselves, and the joke is that everyone has a different agenda, a different grievance, or a different answer to the question of what "Black solidarity" actually means in France. The more people Zadi recruits, the messier the whole thing gets.
What starts as a simple premise about a hapless organizer turns into something more pointed — a comedy about how identity politics become negotiations, and how quickly a political cause can collapse under the weight of individual egos. Stream Simply Black (2020) online on iFILM.
