The Shadow Strays

The Shadow Strays (2024) is an Indonesian action thriller directed by Timo Tjahjanto — watch it online on iFILM. A young female assassin, freshly recruited into a covert organisation called the Shadows, botches her first assignment. The order that follows is simple: go dark in Jakarta, find a low-rent neighbourhood, and wait. She's good at the waiting part. Less good at staying uninvolved.

A kid from her building — parentless, running with the wrong people — gets snatched, and she goes after him. No backup, no clearance, straight into the heart of Jakarta's criminal underworld. Aurora Ribero carries the lead role with physicality and restraint; Yayan Ruhian, familiar from The Raid, shows up in support and delivers exactly what you'd expect from him.

Tjahjanto built his name on brutal choreography across the Macabre and Killers films, and the action here is precisely calibrated — fast, blunt, and without the stylised slow-motion that softens impact in so many Western releases.
