Synopsis
Nothing Sacred (1937) is a classic screwball comedy you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by William A. Wellman, it pairs Carole Lombard with Fredric March.
Reporter Wally Cook turns a small-town woman, Hazel Flagg, into a national sensation after she is diagnosed with a rare, fatal illness. All of New York weeps for the doomed girl, the paper sells like crazy, and the mayor throws her a parade. One problem: the diagnosis was wrong, Hazel is perfectly healthy, and the lie has grown far too big to walk back.
Ben Hecht wrote the script, and the film remains one of the rare screwball comedies of its era shot in three-strip Technicolor. Its jabs at tabloid journalism and a public hungry for other people's misery haven't dated a bit. Lombard is flat-out hilarious here, never once mugging for the camera.
