Synopsis
Yellow Sky (1948) is William Wellman's black-and-white Western you can watch online on iFILM. In 1867 a gang knocks over a bank, then rides straight into a blistering salt flat with no water left.
Half-dead, the outlaws stumble onto a ghost town marked Yellow Sky. Only two people still live there: a tough young woman (Anne Baxter) and her prospector grandfather, rumored to be sitting on gold. Gregory Peck's gang leader, Stretch, soon realizes the real threat isn't the law anymore — it's his own men once they smell the money. Chief among them is Dutch, the cold, calculating figure Richard Widmark plays.
Wellman shot a hard, almost noir story about greed, with the desert bearing down as heavily as any villain; Joseph MacDonald's camera turns the scorched terrain into a character of its own. Critics often read the plot as Shakespeare's The Tempest dropped onto the frontier. Solid old-school filmmaking for anyone who likes their Westerns lean and mean.
