Synopsis
A Day at the Races (1937) is an MGM musical comedy directed by Sam Wood — watch online on iFILM. The Marx Brothers' second film for the studio after A Night at the Opera, it arrived with material Groucho, Chico, and Harpo had already tested in front of live theater audiences before a camera rolled.
The premise: young Judy (Maureen O'Sullivan) is about to lose her sanitarium to creditors. Her one wealthy patient will stay only if Dr. Hugo Hackenbush (Groucho) runs the place. Hackenbush is a veterinarian. There is also a horse race to win on an animal of famously difficult character, with Chico and Harpo complicating every step.
Margaret Dumont returns as Groucho's unfailingly bewildered foil, and Allan Jones plays Judy's sweetheart Gil. The film packs wordplay, slapstick, and musical numbers at a pace that rarely lets up — and at 109 minutes it is the longest and most ambitious of the Marx Brothers' MGM comedies.
