Synopsis
The Harder They Come (1972) is the Jamaican crime drama you can watch online on iFILM. Country boy Ivanhoe Martin lands in Kingston broke and friendless, chasing a single dream: to cut a record. He's got the voice. The city has other plans.
Ivan talks his way into a studio and records a hit, only for slick producer Hilton to buy the rights for pennies and bury it. Cornered, he drifts into dealing weed, guns down a few crooked cops, and — almost by accident — becomes a folk hero in the shantytowns while his single climbs the charts. Reggae great Jimmy Cliff stars and sings, and his soundtrack ("You Can Get It If You Really Want," "Many Rivers to Cross") is famous even among people who've never seen the film.
Director Perry Henzell made the first feature shot in Jamaica by Jamaicans, and it's the movie that broke reggae worldwide. The look is raw and near-documentary, the dialogue in real Kingston patois. Watch this if you care about where Jamaican music came from and want street truth with no gloss. Stream The Harder They Come (1972) online on iFILM.
