Synopsis
Summer of '42 (1971) is Robert Mulligan's tender coming-of-age drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. The war is somewhere far away while three fifteen-year-old boys spend their vacation on a New England island, consumed by one thing: growing up.
Oscy and Benjie chase girls their own age and brag about conquests that never happened. Hermie falls for something real — Dorothy, a woman of twenty-two whose husband has shipped out to the front. She meets the boy with a soft, grieving warmth, and what grows between them has no name either of them knows. Jennifer O'Neill plays Dorothy quietly; Gary Grimes makes Hermie someone anyone who remembers that one summer will recognize.
Mulligan made a hushed, nostalgic film about a moment that stays with a person for life. Its gentle tone and one quiet heartbreak near the end turned it into a classic. Michel Legrand's score won the Academy Award, and its theme is familiar even to people who have never seen the film. Stream Summer of '42 (1971) online on iFILM.
