About

Synopsis

The Unknown (1927) is Tod Browning's silent thriller you can watch online on iFILM — one of the strangest and most disturbing films of its era. In a traveling Spanish circus, a performer billed as Alonzo the Armless works a knife-throwing act with his feet. He does have arms. He has reasons for hiding them that go beyond showmanship.

Lon Chaney plays Alonzo as a man whose entire existence is a layered performance — a fugitive building a cover story so elaborate it traps him. The ringmaster's daughter Nanon, played by a young Joan Crawford, has a deep fear of being touched by men; she gravitates toward the "armless" Alonzo as the one safe presence in her life. He reads her fear clearly. And decides to use it.

Browning and Chaney made several films together in the silent era, and this one sits at the top of that body of work. The 63-minute runtime moves fast, but the psychological weight doesn't lift after the credits. A film about obsession, self-deception, and the moment a lie grows too large to live with.
