A bomb tears through summer Tokyo. Behind it: two boys calling themselves Sphinx, posting cryptic riddles online and daring the police to keep up. Worn-down detective Shibazaki takes the bait and starts cracking the codes. A lonely, bullied schoolgirl named Lisa drifts into the orbit of Nine and Twelve, and then a cold rival, Five, turns the manhunt into a game of chess. Each riddle peels back a buried adult crime — the Athena Plan, a hidden academy, children who were never meant to exist.
