Synopsis
Call Northside 777 (1948) is a docudrama noir you can watch online on iFILM. Henry Hathaway directed James Stewart in a case reconstructed from actual court records and Chicago police files.
A patrolman is shot dead in 1932, and Polish laborer Frank Wiecek goes to prison for life. More than a decade later, his mother places a newspaper notice offering her own money to anyone who can prove her son's innocence. Reporter P.J. McNeal (Stewart) picks it up as a story — and spends the first half convinced the man is guilty. The investigation chips away at that certainty, and the city's resistance to admitting a wrongful conviction chips away at it further.
Hathaway shot scenes inside actual Chicago jails and precinct houses, giving the film a dry, institutional texture unusual for Hollywood in the 1940s. Stewart plays it without warmth — skeptical, impatient, unsentimental. That's what makes it work. Stream Call Northside 777 (1948) on iFILM.
