Synopsis
The Prowler (1951) is a film noir you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Joseph Losey. Susan Gilvray calls the police about a peeping prowler outside her window — and Webb Garwood, the cop who answers, decides this lonely married woman has something he wants.
Instead of protecting her, Garwood starts courting her. He's eaten up by envy: her house, her husband, the money he'll never see on a patrolman's wage. Between shifts he keeps turning over a plan in which only one man stands between him and the good life. Van Heflin plays the conscienceless cop so calmly it gets under your skin.
The screenplay came from Dalton Trumbo, writing under a front name in the thick of the Hollywood blacklist. Losey shot this mean little parable about American greed fast and cheap. A late, overlooked noir well worth digging up. Stream The Prowler (1951) online on iFILM.
