Synopsis
In Love and War (1996) is Richard Attenborough's romance, and you can watch online on iFILM the chapter that shaped a young writer years before A Farewell to Arms. It opens near the Piave in 1918, where an eighteen-year-old Ernest Hemingway shows up not to shoot but to drive an ambulance.
Shrapnel tears into Ernie's leg and lands him in a hospital bed. The nurse who tends to him, Agnes von Kurowsky, is older and unhurried — Sandra Bullock plays her opposite Chris O'Donnell. What grows between them is more than a wartime fling: he asks her to marry him and sail to America, she hesitates, and the front keeps pulling them in different directions. This is the heartbreak Hemingway would later turn into fiction.
Attenborough skips the battlefield bombast and hands the whole story to two performers and a goodbye delivered through a friend. A period piece for people who prefer tales of what slipped away to tales of triumph. Stream In Love and War (1996) online on iFILM.
