Synopsis

Cry Freedom (1987) is a historical drama directed by Richard Attenborough that you can watch online on iFILM, starring Denzel Washington and Kevin Kline. South Africa, 1970s: the apartheid system dictates where Black citizens can live, work, and even walk. White liberal newspaper editor Donald Woods decides to investigate Stephen Biko, a fearless anti-apartheid activist dismissed by many as a radical.

What Woods finds is a man of uncommon moral clarity. When Biko dies in police custody — the authorities call it self-inflicted — Woods faces a choice that puts his family in the crosshairs. Getting the story out means leaving South Africa in secret. The film splits between Biko's world and the nerve-shredding escape, and that structural choice keeps it from becoming a comfortable tribute. Washington's performance here is the one that announced him as a serious force.

Adapted from Donald Woods' own memoirs, the picture picked up three Academy Award nominations. Stream Cry Freedom (1987) online on iFILM.
