Synopsis
Doctor Who (1996) is the BBC and Universal co-produced TV movie that launched Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor — watch it online on iFILM. The Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) regenerates on the rain-soaked streets of San Francisco on New Year's Eve 1999, and the new incarnation wakes up with no memory and the Master already closing in.
Eric Roberts plays the Master with deliberate theatrical menace. Emergency room surgeon Grace Holloway (Daphne Ashbrook) accidentally puts the Doctor on her operating table, then ends up helping him prevent a temporal catastrophe before midnight. The production leaned heavily into the American setting — big budget, glossy cinematography, and a tone caught somewhere between the classic series and a Hollywood blockbuster pitch.
The film was made as a pilot for a US series revival that never happened. For fans of the franchise, it remains the only full-length screen appearance of the Eighth Doctor — McGann didn't return to the role until a short 2013 minisode. Stream Doctor Who (1996) online on iFILM.
