The apartment descends into cheerful disorder, the girls push back hard, and almost nothing goes according to any plan he makes. Forbes based the story on her own childhood — Ruffalo is playing her father — and that first-hand knowledge keeps the film from tilting into sentimentality or easy answers. It's less interested in bipolar disorder as a subject than in a specific man trying his best. Ruffalo is very good here: funny, exhausting, and genuinely moving.
