Synopsis
The Trip to Italy (2014) is a comedy-drama from director Michael Winterbottom that you can watch online on iFILM, starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as lightly fictionalized versions of themselves, commissioned to review six restaurants across Liguria, Tuscany, Rome and the Amalfi Coast.
The food is the pretext. What the film is actually about is two men in a car doing impression battles — Michael Caine, Al Pacino, Bon Scott — trying to one-up each other across hairpin bends with a view. The competition is frequently very funny. It's also occasionally melancholy: somewhere between Portofino and Positano, questions about age and ambition surface and don't entirely go away.
Winterbottom originally shot this as four episodes for BBC Two, then cut it into a feature. It's the follow-up to The Trip (2010), though it works perfectly well on its own — same two men, different landscape, a few more things left unsaid. Stream The Trip to Italy (2014) online on iFILM.
