Synopsis
Colin in Black and White (2021) is a Netflix drama miniseries you can watch online on iFILM. NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick narrates his own coming-of-age: a Black teenager growing up with white adoptive parents in a quiet California suburb, learning early how other people's expectations work.
Jaden Michael plays the young Colin, with Mary-Louise Parker and Nick Offerman as his mom and dad. Kaepernick himself steps in as the adult narrator, pausing the action to unpack moments from his teens — high-school sports, hair, dating, and the small humiliations of being the only Black kid in the room. Six episodes trace the years that built him, from middle school to the athlete the world would later argue about.
Ava DuVernay co-created and directed part of the series, and her fingerprint is all over it: a private story told as a lesson in how society quietly teaches you your place. Robert Townsend and Kenny Leon directed episodes too. Don't expect a sports thriller — this is a sharp, talky drama aimed at viewers who care about real lives and the politics under them.
