Earn Marks is broke, couch-surfing at his ex-girlfriend Van's place, and convinced the answer is managing his cousin Alfred — rapper Paper Boi, who's gone locally viral after a street shooting neither of them planned on. Alfred doesn't really want a manager. Earn doesn't really have a plan. The season follows both through the unglamorous stretch of almost-made-it: waiting rooms, low-budget gigs, a nightclub where Paper Boi gets outshone by an NBA player. Darius (Lakeith Stanfield) drifts through every scene with his own internal rules; Van (Zazie Beetz) anchors what the men can't see about themselves.
