Dorothy "Dot" Lyon has a husband, a daughter, a house, and a perfectly unremarkable Midwestern life. It turns out that life is built on sand. Sheriff Roy Tillman has decided that Dot is his property — a wife who ran years ago — and he sends people to bring her back. What follows is an escalating siege: hired muscle, a home invasion, an FBI raid on Roy's ranch by the finale, and a powerful mother-in-law named Lorraine Lyon who has her own ideas about how to fix the problem. Tillman talks a lot about the natural order of things. He has no idea who he is dealing with.
Jessie Buckley plays Dot with a tightly-wound stillness that keeps threatening to snap, and the season earns the payoff.
