When Ray and his girlfriend Nikki Swango try to swipe a valuable postage stamp from Emmit's safe deposit box, their scheme spills into a double murder. That death reaches Gloria Burgle, a quietly sharp small-town police chief who is already asking questions about her own stepfather's odd past. Threading through all of it is V. M. Varga — a financial predator who has decided that Emmit's legitimate business is simply a tool for his own purposes, and who does not take no for an answer.
