Synopsis
Christopher and His Kind (2011) is a BBC biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Matt Smith plays the young writer Christopher Isherwood, with Geoffrey Sax directing a trip into Berlin during the last gasp of the Weimar years.
It's 1931. Poet W. H. Auden talks Christopher into joining him in a city where a gay man can finally live in the open. He teaches English, rents a room next to dive-bar singer Jean Ross, and falls hard for a young street sweeper named Heinz. Outside, the swastikas keep going up — and Heinz's own brother is one of the men raising them. Imogen Poots, Lindsay Duncan and Toby Jones round out the cast.
Those Berlin months later became the Isherwood book that gave the world the musical and movie Cabaret. The film refuses to prettify the era: the freedom and the dread arrive together. Stream Christopher and His Kind (2011) online on iFILM.
