Synopsis

The Front Line (고지전, 2011) is a South Korean war film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Jang Hoon and starring Shin Ha-kyun and Ko Soo. It covers the final months of the Korean War, when armistice talks had been dragging on for years and soldiers were still dying for a hill no one could hold.

Captain Kang is sent to the eastern front to investigate what's going wrong in one particular unit. What he finds is a company that has been fighting over the same ridge so many times they've lost count — and somewhere along the way started leaving food rations for the enemy soldiers in the same bunkers. The ownership of that ridge changes hands multiple times a day. By the time the armistice is signed, the men have been in this loop long enough to know their counterparts on the other side better than their own families.

Jang Hoon is not interested in heroism. The film is about what a prolonged stalemate does to people when the political machinery keeps grinding and the human cost stays invisible to everyone except the ones in the mud. The final assault sequence — launched after the ceasefire is already agreed upon — is the kind of filmmaking that doesn't need to explain itself. Stream The Front Line online on iFILM.
