Synopsis
Auntie Mame (1958) is Morton DaCosta's comedy, and you can watch it online on iFILM. Flamboyant Mame Dennis is living large in 1920s New York when her orphaned nephew, Patrick, lands on her doorstep.
Mame raises the boy on her own terms: parties instead of prep school, a parade of eccentric houseguests, and the conviction that life is a banquet most poor suckers are starving to death at. The late father's stuffy trustee is horrified and keeps trying to pack Patrick off to a respectable boarding school. Rosalind Russell, reprising her Broadway role, runs the whole show — every line reading and pause landing exactly where it should.
Russell carried the part over from the stage and earned an Oscar nomination for it, while the film became one of the biggest box-office draws of its year. The costumes and sets sweep you through two decades of style, from the Roaring Twenties into the late thirties. A sparkling, fast-talking comedy for anyone who loves old Hollywood and a larger-than-life lead. Stream Auntie Mame online on iFILM.
