Synopsis
Man of the West (1958), directed by Anthony Mann, is a psychological western you can watch online on iFILM. Gary Cooper plays Link Jones, a quietly settled farmer whose outlaw years are further behind him than anyone knows — until a train robbery dumps him right back in that world.
Stranded in the wilderness with saloon singer Billie Ellis (Julie London) and gambler Sam Beasley (Arthur O'Connell), Link leads the group to the only shelter he knows: a remote shack where his old gang is still holed up. Lee J. Cobb plays Dock Tobin, the aging patriarch who raised Link as a criminal, with a slow menace that outweighs any action scene in the film. To survive, Link has to pretend he's back in the fold — and that act starts costing him more than he planned.
Mann strips the western down to something darker than gunfights: a man forced to step through a door he thought he'd locked for good. Cooper was already past his leading-man peak when this was shot, and that weathered quality makes Link's conflict feel lived-in rather than theatrical. The film flopped on release but has since been reassessed as one of the sharpest character studies the genre produced. Stream Man of the West (1958) on iFILM.
