Synopsis
The Music Man (1962) is a classic Hollywood musical you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Morton DaCosta and adapted from Meredith Willson's long-running Broadway show. Robert Preston and Shirley Jones star; the film ran 151 minutes, landed six Academy Award nominations, and took home the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy in 1963.
Harold Hill rolls into River City, Iowa, in 1912 with a well-worn swindle: sell the town on a boys' marching band, pocket the money for uniforms and instruments, then vanish before anyone notices he can't read a note of music. The townspeople fall for it completely. What Hill doesn't account for is Marian, the town librarian — she figures him out quickly, but she doesn't sound the alarm, and the longer she waits the more complicated things get.
Preston is the reason the whole thing works. He's all velocity and charm, talking faster than anyone can think, and you root for him even knowing exactly what he is. A young Ron Howard turns up as Marian's little brother. The film captures the particular energy of a showman completely in his element — and then quietly pulls the rug.
