Synopsis
La Civil (2021) is a crime drama you can watch online on iFILM, where Cielo, a mother in northern Mexico, learns her teenage daughter has been taken and held for ransom.
She pays. The girl does not come home. The police file their reports, the army has its own cartel war to fight, and so Cielo stops waiting. She tracks the kidnappers herself, bargains with gunmen, rides along with soldiers, and slowly hardens into someone her old self would not recognize. Arcelia Ramírez carries nearly every frame.
Director Teodora Ana Mihai built her first fiction feature out of the true accounts of Mexican mothers hunting for the disappeared. It picked up a Special Mention in Cannes' Un Certain Regard.
