Synopsis
The Island at the Top of the World (1974) is a Disney adventure fantasy you can watch online on iFILM. The year is 1907, and London gentleman Sir Anthony Ross throws together a hurried expedition to the Arctic to find the son who vanished up there.
His party climbs aboard a grand airship and sails north, past the edge of every chart. What waits in the ice is not emptiness but a hidden valley warmed by volcanic springs, home to descendants of Vikings who have kept to themselves for centuries. The strangers get no welcome, since the island's secret is worth killing for in the eyes of anyone who might carry word of it home. Robert Stevenson, the director of Mary Poppins, steered the whole voyage.
The film picked up an Academy Award nomination for its art direction, and it earns it: the airship, the ice caverns and the Norse settlement are all built by hand, the old way, with real care for detail. It is a cozy, Jules Verne-flavored family adventure from the era when wonder came from models rather than pixels. Stream The Island at the Top of the World (1974) online on iFILM.
