Synopsis
Conversation Piece (Gruppo di Famiglia in un Interno, 1974) is one of Luchino Visconti's last films, and you can watch it online on iFILM. An aging American-born professor lives out his days alone in a Roman palazzo, surrounded by books and old master paintings, until a louder world forces its way through his door.
The intrusion arrives as Marchesa Bianca Brumonti (Silvana Mangano), who bullies the professor into renting the upper floor to her young lover Konrad, played by Helmut Berger. Her daughter Lietta and Lietta's fiancé Stefano move in too. The group hauls in scandal, politics, sex and money, everything the old man spent decades shutting out. Burt Lancaster plays him almost without gestures, all in the eyes: a man realizing how much his chosen solitude has cost him.
Visconti confines nearly the whole story to one apartment and turns it into a portrait of a dying class and his own old age, shot while the director was already gravely ill. Beneath the deliberately drawing-room melodrama sits a bitter meditation on death, the political rot of 1970s Italy, and the impossibility of staying neutral.
