Property developer Alonzo Hawk wants to demolish Mrs. Steinmetz's Victorian house to clear the site for yet another skyscraper. She won't sell. She was born in that house and has no intention of leaving, money or no money. Hawk sends his nephew to negotiate — the nephew promptly sides with Mrs. Steinmetz. And then there is Herbie, the sentient white Beetle from the 1968 original, who turns out to have very strong feelings about injustice.
The sequel leans harder into slapstick than its predecessor, and the car stunt sequences are genuinely inventive. Hayes — a two-time Oscar winner who also took home a Tony — plays Mrs. Steinmetz with the kind of unhurried confidence that makes every scene with her land.
