Synopsis
The First Day of My Life (Il primo giorno della mia vita, 2023) is an Italian fantasy drama from Paolo Genovese, available to watch online on iFILM. Four strangers who have chosen to end their lives are granted a week's reprieve by a mysterious guide.
On a rainy night the paths of four desperate people cross. A cynical motivational coach, a former gymnast left in a wheelchair after an injury, a policewoman shattered by her daughter's death, and a bullied overweight teen blogger. Each has already taken the final step — and then a nameless stranger, played by Toni Servillo, appears. He brings the four to a quiet hotel and offers a strange bargain: seven days to watch, from the outside, how the world would carry on without them.
Genovese, the writer-director behind Perfect Strangers, again builds an intimate drama around a single strong premise and close-up faces. The ensemble includes Margherita Buy, Valerio Mastandrea and Sara Serraiocco, each carrying a private wound and a chance to heal it. The film is sentimental but never cloying; it argues gently against despair without pretending the answers are easy.
