Promise Me This

Promise Me This (Zavet, 2007) is Emir Kusturica's Balkan romantic comedy, and you can watch online on iFILM. A dying grandfather hands his grandson Cane a peculiar to-do list: sell the cow, bring home an icon, and find a bride before the old man's time runs out.

Cane comes down from a remote mountain village into a loud, chaotic city where nothing matches his grandfather's plan. The relative he was sent to find is already dead. Instead he teams up with two warm-hearted small-time crooks who happen to be demolition men, falls for a schoolgirl named Jasna, and gets dragged into rescuing her and her mother from a gangster called Bajo. It's a France–Serbia co-production shot with the brass-band, livestock-in-the-frame, gypsy-wedding energy that marks every Kusturica picture.

The cast includes Aleksandar Berček, Miki Manojlović and Stribor Kusturica, steered by a director who has taken the Palme d'Or twice.
