Synopsis
Whisky Galore (2016) is a British comedy directed by Gillies MacKinnon — watch it online on iFILM. On the remote Scottish island of Todday, wartime rationing has killed the whisky supply, and the islanders are in something close to collective mourning. Then the cargo ship SS Cabinet Minister runs aground offshore with thousands of cases of the good stuff on board.
What follows is a one-sided battle of wits. Eddie Izzard plays Captain Waggett, the officious English Home Guard commander who sees the whole thing as a matter of regulations and duty. The islanders see it differently. Gregor Fisher leads the ensemble as the community patriarch, and the cast makes the most of every scene in which local ingenuity runs circles around military protocol.
The film is a remake of Alexander Mackendrick's beloved 1949 Ealing comedy, itself based on Compton Mackenzie's novel drawn from a real wartime incident. It's a lighter film than it might sound — less satire, more gentle farce — and that suits it fine. Stream Whisky Galore (2016) on iFILM.
