Luka, a dreamy railway engineer, is sinking everything into a tunnel that will connect his corner of the Balkans to the wider world. Then the war starts, his wife bolts with a Hungarian musician, and his son gets drafted.
To bring the boy home alive, Luka is ordered to guard Sabaha — a young Muslim nurse kept as a bargaining chip for a prisoner swap. He resents the assignment. She despises her captor. Slavko Štimac and Nataša Tapušković play the collision of two people who have every reason to hate each other and no script for what happens next. All 155 minutes run on Kusturica's signature mix: a brass band somewhere nearby, a bear on a chain, soldiers who argue about honor between artillery rounds, and grief that keeps arriving as slapstick.
The film took the Special Jury Prize at Cannes 2004. Beneath the chaos it is a sharp-edged film about what ordinary people lose when a war they didn't choose lands on their doorstep. Stream Life Is a Miracle online on iFILM.
