Synopsis
Empire of Passion (愛の亡霊, 1978) is Nagisa Oshima's haunted period drama, and you can watch it online on iFILM. In a remote village near Tokyo at the close of the 19th century, the wife of an aging rickshaw driver falls for a man half her age. Together they kill her husband and drop his body down a disused well.
What follows isn't a murder mystery but a slow rot of guilt. The affair drags on in secret for three years, yet the dead man refuses to stay buried: his ghost drifts along the foggy road, sits by the well, visits the whole village. Fear of exposure and a creeping dread eat at the lovers far more than any investigation could. Kazuko Yoshiyuki and Tatsuya Fuji carry this doomed obsession to the edge of madness.
Oshima shot the film as a darker echo of his own In the Realm of the Senses — less provocation, more sorrow and folk horror about the restless dead. It earned him the Best Director prize at Cannes in 1978. Cold, beautiful and deeply unsettling, it rewards anyone drawn to slow Asian arthouse. Stream Empire of Passion (1978) online on iFILM.
