Synopsis
The Twilight Samurai (たそがれ清兵衛, 2002) is a Japanese period drama directed by Yoji Yamada that you can watch online on iFILM. Hiroyuki Sanada plays Seibei Iguchi, a low-ranking samurai who rushes home after every shift rather than drinking with colleagues — because a widower with two daughters and a senile mother cannot afford evenings out.

But the clan has its own plans. A chance victory in a street brawl with a wooden sword earns him a reputation he never wanted, and a personal order from his lord: track down and kill another vassal — a man who turns out to be as worn and cornered as Seibei himself.
Yamada built the film around the weight of duty on ordinary people, not on battle spectacle. It swept Japan's Academy Awards and competed for the American Oscar in the foreign film category — the opening chapter of what became Yamada's samurai trilogy.
