Synopsis
Unfair Competition (Concorrenza sleale, 2001) is an Italian-French tragicomedy from Ettore Scola you can watch online on iFILM. In the Prati quarter of late-1930s Rome, two fabric shops sit door to door, their owners poaching each other's customers by every trick they can manage.
Leone, who is Jewish, undercuts every price and steals the trade; his Italian neighbor Umberto fumes and schemes petty revenge. Ordinary shopkeeper warfare, day after day. Then Fascism hardens around them, and one morning a fresh set of racial rules simply strikes Leone from the register and forbids him to earn a living at all. To his own surprise, the rather dim Umberto discovers he has a conscience.
Diego Abatantuono plays Leone, Sergio Castellitto plays Umberto, and Gérard Depardieu rounds out the cast. A master of the Italian comedy of manners, Scola buries a bitter chronicle inside everyday humor: two rivals turn into friends just as their country loses its mind.
