Synopsis
The Terrace (La terrazza, 1980) is Ettore Scola's bittersweet tragicomedy, available to watch online on iFILM. On a Roman rooftop the same circle of ageing intellectuals keeps gathering — screenwriters, journalists, politicians, left-leaning men of letters.
They once believed freedom after fascism would change everything. Now each one is stuck. A writer can't squeeze out a single page. A producer fears he's finished. A communist deputy recites the right slogans and believes none of them. Wives walk out, affairs fade, the talk goes in circles. Scola breaks the film into novella-like portraits, each a man who has outlived his own ideals.
The cast is half of Italian cinema at once: Vittorio Gassman, Ugo Tognazzi, Marcello Mastroianni, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Stefania Sandrelli. The screenplay by Age, Scarpelli and Scola took a prize at Cannes. Smart, mournful filmmaking about a generation that slept through its own life — for anyone who likes Italian comedy with a bitter aftertaste. Stream The Terrace online on iFILM.
